Mineral Crystals-Mineral Content-Himalayan Salt-Skin Diseases-Salt Deposits

Himalayan Pink Salt

Recently I started to use Himalayan Rose Pink Salt, I love it!Here are some awesome benefits and facts about Himalayan Pink Salt;Himalayan Pink Salt is a pure, hand-mined salt that is derived from ancient sea salt deposits, and it is believed to be the purest form of salt available.  The high mineral crystals range in color from sheer white, varying shades of pink, to deep reds, the result of high mineral and iron content.
Himalayan Pink Salt has a rich mineral content that includes over 84 minerals and trace elements such as: calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron.  This salt is recognized for its beautiful pink color, high mineral content, and its therapeutic properties.  Regular consumption of Himalayan Pink Salt provides essential minerals, trace elements, balances electrolytes, supports proper nutrient absorption, eliminates toxins, balances the body’s pH, normalizes blood pressure, and increases circulation and conductivity.  It can also assist with relief from arthritis, skin rashes, psoriasis, herpes, and flu and fever symptoms.
For culinary purposes, simply dissolve the salt into soups and hot dishes, or place the coarse salt crystals into a salt grinder and mill directly onto dishes.
Medicinally, Himalayan Salt is dissolved in water to create a brine, which is often referred to as “energized water”. This brine is used for a plethora of physical ailments including arthritis, rheumatism, osteoporosis, gout, kidney and gall bladder stones, skin diseases, psoriasis, and for toxin elimination.  The proper way to consume the brine is in the morning on an empty stomach, taking one teaspoon of Himalayan Salt Brine with a glass of water.  Wait 10 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.
Externally, a brine bath is recommended for detoxification, to strengthen the immune system, heal skin diseases, for rheumatism and joint diseases, to balance the skin’s pH, and for recovery after surgery.  In order receive the full benefit of a therapeutic salt bath, it is recommended to use 1-2 pounds of salt per bath, and make sure that the water temperature is around 97 degrees Fahrenheit to mimic the body’s temperature.  Soak for 20-30 minutes.
Facial steams are recommended for those with asthma, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, and for all acute, chronic, and specific illnesses of the upper and lower respiratory tracts.  Simply boil water, add salt to water, cover your head with a towel to create a “tent”, and inhale the vapors for 10-15 minutes.
Poultices made with the brine are used to treat open wounds, and pain from arthritis, gout and osteoporosis.  Simply soak a cloth with body temperature brine, and apply the cloth to the treatment area.  Wrap this poultice with a dry cloth.* source read more..

Binge Eating Disorder-Mindful Eating-Gain Control-Binge Eater

Gain Control Over Binge Eating

Signs that you are a binge eater:
Feelings of being out of control
Frequently eat large portions of food
Hiding food and eating in private
Feeling guilty after overeating
Feeling depressed
Having metabolic syndrome
How to Gain Control Over Binge Eating
Recognize that you have a binge eating disorder
Realize that it is normal to have a relapse while overcoming your binge eating
Enlist support from family, friends and a self-help group
Learn to eat naturally by eating only when you are hungry and never eating until you are full.
Eat frequent small meals throughout the day so you don’t get overly hungry and eat absentmindedly.
Be conscious of the kinds of food you put in your body
Practice mindful eating
Eat for health and energy rather than cravings
Try cognitive-behavior therapy or psychotherapy
Try an antidepressant
Find the motivation to exercise daily
Look for the silver lining – adapt a positive attitude
Benefits of overcoming binge eating:
Regain control over food
Better manage stress
Stop feeling like you have to hide your eating habits
Feel better about your body
Improve you overall health
Reduce chances of getting a life-threatening disease
Have more energy
Increase self-esteem
And what can you do to stop a binge before it starts?
1. Already bought your Halloween candy? There’s still time to stop yourself. Save a bite-sized piece, eat it, and enjoy it. Give the rest to a homeless shelter. Don’t take it to work. Put your imagination to work on alternative treats to hand out - like raisins, cereal, pencils, party favors, etc. - and don’t feel guilty. You can count on your neighbors to provide chocolate to the kids.
2. Have a plan. Eat a nutritious snack before going to a party. Tell yourself you’ll eat just half of what’s served, then stick to your vow.
3. Plan active days off and vacations. Don’t assume you have to gain weight if you’re indulging. Compensate with physical activity.
4. Identify your triggers. For example, if you’re going to a family gathering, are you likely to feel resentful or guilty about long-standing differences with certain family members? Deal with these issues. Food can mask them but won’t make them disappear.
5. Distinguish between indulging and bingeing. Occasionally allow yourself to indulge without eating out of control. The tendency to engage in black-and-white thinking is the hallmark of a problem with food. “If you think one Snickers makes a disaster, then you might think, ‘Why not go all the way and really binge?’”
6. Snack often on nutritious foods to keep from getting overly hungry. Carry an insulated snack pack everywhere. It’s filled with foods such as dried and fresh fruits, baby carrots, nonfat yogurt, trail mix, whole-grain cereal, nuts, and baked chips. You have to defend yourself, you can’t go out into the modern ‘obese-ogenic’ environment and hope not to get fat, just as you wouldn’t go out in the rain without an umbrella and expect to not get wet. read more..

American Heart Association-Smoked Salmon-Heart Disease-Soy Protein-Recipe Idea

5 Heart-Healthy Foods

Blueberries top the list as one of the most powerful disease-fighting foods. That’s because they contain anthocyanins, the antioxidant responsible for their dark blue color. These delicious jewels are packed with fiber, vitamin C, and are available all year long. Boost heart health by adding them into your diet regularly. Here’s how:
1. Top your whole-grain cereal with fresh or frozen blueberries to add delicious flavor, a dose of fiber, and heart-healthy antioxidants.
2. Power up pancakes, waffles, or muffins with fresh, frozen, or dried blueberries for a nutritious breakfast.
3. Eat them plain or mix with other fruit for a low-calorie, high-fiber tasty fruit salad, dessert, or snack.
Recipe idea: Make an irresistible trifle by layering lady fingers, light whipped topping or low-fat pudding, and blueberries. Or puree a batch of berries for a breakfast or dessert sauce.
This cold-water fish is a great source of protein and is also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association advises eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week for benefits that go beyond heart health. Americans love salmon because it is so versatile, easy to cook, and tastes great.
1. Salmon is easy to prepare on the grill, in the oven or microwave, or on the stovetop. Save leftovers to toss into pasta dishes, make into salmon cakes, add to salads, or mix into dips or spreads.
2. Smoked salmon comes in two varieties. The raw type is commonly used in appetizers and on bagels with cream cheese and capers. The dry smoked type has more of a cooked appearance. You can enjoy it the same way as the raw style, and add it to cooked dishes such as pasta.
3. Salmon cooks in a matter of minutes and its delicate texture quickly absorbs and showcases the flavor of added ingredients. For example, toss chunks of salmon into a chowder of corn and potatoes, or wrap salmon with herbs and chopped onion and tomatoes in parchment or aluminum foil and grill or bake 12 minutes for a satisfying meal.
Recipe idea: Marinate salmon in a lime, onion, garlic, and soy mixture for 15 minutes before grilling for a delicious fish taco or grilled fish sandwich.Soy Protein
This inexpensive, high-quality protein contains fiber, vitamins, and minerals — all the ingredients for a heart-healthy meal. Also, a diet rich in soy protein can lower triglycerides, which help prevent cardiovascular disease and keep your heart strong and healthy. In those with high cholesterol levels, the benefits of soy foods are due to their high levels of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.1. Pack a soy protein bar or a bag of soy nuts for a quick snack during the day.
2. Edamame (the Japanese name for green soybeans) are snacks even kids will love! Find these nutritious nuggets in the freezer section at your supermarket. Boil them, then serve warm in the pod. Pop them out of the pod to eat plain or with a low-fat dip.
3. Tofu, made of soy beans, takes on the flavor of spices and foods you cook with it. Saute cubed tofu with green and red peppers, sliced garlic, and a dash or two of curry powder. Or add tofu to soups for a healthy dose of fat-free protein.
Recipe idea: Soy milk is not just for the lactose-intolerant. Make a nutritious beverage with chocolate soy milk, a banana, and some ice for a delicious smoothie.
Grandma called it roughage and we need plenty of it each day. Oatmeal is one way to get it. Oats are nourishing whole grains and a great source of vitamins, minerals, and cholesterol-lowering fiber. The FDA allows manufacturers of oats to make health claims about the grain on their products, suggesting that a diet high in oats can reduce the risk for heart disease. Research shows oats lower cholesterol levels, keep you regular, and may help prevent certain cancers.

Sugary Foods

peanutbuttahealthnut:There are so many “foods” out there today...

peanutbuttahealthnut:There are so many “foods” out there today with health claims promising to lower your cholesterol, help you fit into that itsy bitsy teeny bikini, or allow you to eat a whole bag of chips for less than 140 calories.  All of that seems great.. until you learn what’s really in those foods. However, almost all of these foods are not really food at all.  They’re unhealthy, processed junk full of chemical sweeteners and all kinds of crazy ingredients.  Here are some top offenders (in my opinion!)1. Fiber One BarI put this on my list because I used to eat them every day in high school.  Wow, cool! It tastes like a candy bar .. and it’s only 90 to 140 calories!  However, there is a ton of sugar and sweeteners in these.  To lower the calorie count, artificial sweeteners are used, and we all know how bad those are for you.  Actually I singlehandedly blame them for a lot of my wants to binge on sugary foods. However, I will admit… the fiber is awesome.  Like, really awesome.Opt for : Luna bars, Lara bars, or make your own protein bars (the best option).  They’re higher in calories, so be careful and don’t make a habit of eating them!2. Yoplait yogurtOh my. Where do I begin?  While I was on vacation just this year, I picked it up thinking it was a healthy option for breakfast.  Halfway through eating it, I couldn’t take another bite after glancing at the nutritional information.  14g of sugar in the light yogurt, and I won’t even go into the ingredients on that list!Opt for: All-natural greek yogurt.  Try getting the plain kind and adding in honey & your own fruit if possible! I like Chobani the best.3. Deli MeatsI do buy low sodium, antibiotic-free, hormone-free (that’s a mouthful!) turkey slices on occasion, but I make sure not to eat it on a daily basis.  There’s a lot of sodium in them and they are still a processed food, believe it or not!Opt for: Whole chicken & turkey breasts.  It will taste more “real”, too :) You can still slice the chicken breast into deli-like slices!4. Low Calorie BreadUgh, yuck.  These are NOT A FOOD.  For real, they taste horrible and just peek at that ingredients list!  Isn’t bread supposed to be simple and clean?  This is one “food” that is most definitely not clean or healthy… and it will not keep you full.Opt for: Ezekiel bread5. Light Salad DressingNothing but sugar and chemicals.. and fat.Opt for: salsa, hummus, basil pesto, olive oil, oil & vinegar, or make your own salad dressing! Get creative.6. Diet ProductsAnything that says “diet”… aka, diet coke, diet cookies, 100 calorie snack packs, etc.  Seriously, get rid of your diet pop obsession!  Once I stopped drinking 1-2 diet cokes a day, I also stopped wanting to binge and also stopped getting horrible headaches.  Coincidence? I think not. Splenda/artificial sweetners suck!Opt for: water & lemon, seltzer w/ a splash of 100% juice, coffee, tea. 7. Fat FreeFat is not the enemy.. that is a complete diet falsehood that has been passed throughout our generation.  Fat does not make you fat.. processed junk food and excess food makes you fat!  Often fat free foods have added sugar and salt to make up for the lack of taste, so they may wind up being worse for you.  The only case where this is untrue is with fat free dairy products!Opt for: You shouldn’t be eating processed food anyways.. so.. just opt for the real version!  In the case of things like peanut butter, get the full fat.  It has the same calories and tastes better.8. Canned fruits in fruit juiceWhen buying canned fruits (which honestly, I think is kinda gross. I do like canned veggies sometimes though!), make sure you do not get the kind in heavy syrup.  There is so. much. sugar. in. that.Opt for: Real, fresh fruit!  If that’s not available to you, just make sure there is only the fruit in there.  As for canned veggies, get no salt added or light salt. I hope this helped to clear up some myths about all the “food” we have out there!  Clean foods don read more..

Top Cancer Causing Foods-Cancer Cell Growth-Pancreatic Cancer-Cancer Growth

Top Cancer Causing Foods "Cancer Preventing Foods

Top cancer causing foods:Sweetened drinks: it’s been shown that people whom consume two or more servings of soda per week have an astonishing 87% higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer!Fried foods: this includes potato related foods such as french fries, tater tots, potato chips and hash browns. This is due to acrylamide which is created during the frying process at high temperatures. Acrylamide causes tumors and has detrimental effects on the brain as well as the reproductive system.Process meats and bacon: these products contain sodium nitrite (aka nitrate), an ingredient added by manufactures to give the meats the pink or what is considered “fresh” look to them. When digested, sodium nitrites convert in the body to something called nitrosamine, a known carcinogen. When meats are cooked at high temperatures, a cancer causing toxin equivalent to burning tobacco develops.Doughnuts: these cute little rings of deliciousness are high in sugar and refined carbs, not to mention deep-fried! They contain hydrogenated oils which create trans fat, known to be associated with heart disease and cancer.Snacks such as chips and cookies: these treats are full of refined sugars, trans fats and white flour. Look out!Top cancer preventing foods:Leafy vegetables, broccoli: Let’s start with the more obvious choice, leafy vegetables such as cabbage, kale, and most importantly, broccoli. These cute little green trees help to fight off stomach, liver, skin, lung, bladder, prostate, and breast cancers. Broccoli contains sulforaphane, an antioxidant that rids the body of cancer-causing toxins. Simply put eat broccoli as much as possible. Toss it in your salad, rice, and stir fry.
Berries: All types of berries are beneficial to your health. Black raspberries fight off skin, oral, colon, and esophageal cancers. They contain anthocyanins, antioxidants that slow the growth of premalignant cells.
Garlic; isn’t just for keeping vampires away, it helps keep cancer away too. When consuming certain red meats, nitrates are injested, forming carcinogens in the stomach. Garlic helps slow down this process and fight stomach, esophageal, breast, and colon cancers. Crush up some garlic and add to your tomato sauce for a cancer fighting double whammy!
Tomatoes; contain lycopene, which has been shown to stop cancer cell growth according to research. The sure fire way to increase lycopene is by cooking tomatoes. So whip up some of your own sauce or tomato stew and ward off lung, cancer, prostate, and endometrial cancers.
Walnuts; are great for fighting both breast and prostate cancers. Adding just an ounce of walnuts a day will help to keep the cancer away.Beans: Navy and black beans help delay cancer growth of breast and colon cancers. Add a half a cup to your diet a week for a natural colon cleanse!
As always, stay away from animal fats, processed meat, and excessive amounts of alcohol. read more..

Peanut Butter-Protein Bars-Moskovitz-Calories

Most Dangerous Health Foods

“Protein bars are basically vitamin and protein-infused candy bars,” says Moskovitz. “They seem like a healthy snack replacement, but they can contain more than twice the amount of fat and carbs as a chocolate brownie.” To steer clear of needless calories, look for options that have less than 180 calories and 5 grams fat, and provide at least 5 grams of fiber.
With more than 100 calories per ¼ cup serving, calories can add up quickly when you’re eating dried fruit. Antonucci recommends reaching for fresh or frozen fruits instead. “You’ll be able to eat a larger, more satisfying serving for fewer calories and feel fuller from the fluids,” Antonucci says.
Yogurt in any form is a good source of calcium and vitamin D. But some brands have as much fat and sugar as a jelly-donut. Be sure you’re only getting the good stuff by choosing plain, low-fat versions. Flavor them on your own with fruit and honey. And go Greek when you can. Plain Greek Yogurt offers twice as much protein and half the amount of carbs as the traditional type, Moskovitz says.
In a head-to-head battle between butter and its artificial competitor, the original wins by a landslide. Sure, the spreads have the same number of calories, but Margarine has more trans fat, which simultaneously raises your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol and lowers “good” (HDL) cholesterol, according to the Mayo Clinic. “That’s the one ingredient we dietitians recommend to avoid completely,” Moskovitz says. To limit your risk of heart disease, stick with the real stuff. And choose whipped butter, which has a lower caloric density.
Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter
When manufacturers take fat out of peanut butter, they replace it with sugars. As a result, reduced-fat peanut butter has the same total calories as the original, but more than twice the amount of carbs. “It’s better to stick with the regular stuff,” Moskovitz says. “You’ll eat less, because the full-fat version is more satisfying and filling.”
“Think of these as a decadent treat, not a healthy coffee companion,” says Antonucci. A typical bran muffin has more than 400 calories and up to 15 grams of fat, with most of the calories coming from sugar and refined flour. Can’t skip your morning muffin? The best bet is to make a lower-fat, portion controlled version at home, Antonucci says.
Fat-Free Salad Dressing
If you’re watching your blood pressure, steer clear of this stuff. “In just two measly tablespoons of fat-free Italian dressing, you take in up to 500mg of blood-pressure-raising sodium,” Moskovitz says. “That’s a third of the total amount you should eat in an entire day.” Instead, she recommends making your own low-salt dressing by combining balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and flavor-packed seasonings like pepper, turmeric and mustard seed.
Many people think that ordering a turkey burger instead of beef will keep them slim. Don’t be fooled. The average restaurant-style turkey burger has more than 600 calories and 30 grams of fat – and that’s without the bun or toppings. “The next time you’re wondering which burger to choose, don’t worry about the type of meat,” Moskovitz says. “Instead, limit your portion size by sharing it with a friend, or going open-faced.”
Sushi rolls can be deceiving, because they’re packed tightly and look small, but some are calorie bombs just waiting to blow up your waistline. A single roll can pack more than 500 calories. To steer clear of these calorie-dense tripwires, Moskovitz recommends avoiding any roll that includes these ingredients: tempura (which is another word for deep fried), cream cheese, shredded cheese, or spicy mayo sauce. read more..

Blood Cholesterol Levels-Cardiovascular Disease-Benefits Of Flaxseed-Milled Flax Seed

The health benefits of Flaxseed

Richest source of omega fatty acids and lignans (potent cancer fighters) known in nature. The immune-enhancing omega fatty acids 3, 6, and 9 are balanced in the combination your body requires for optimal health. Also loaded with vitamins and phytonutrients, and an excellent source of protein and fiber, flaxseed is nature’s gift to health!
Provides improved Immune Function- Immunity is the body’s ability to defend itself successfully against foreign substances. The alpha linolenic acid, as well as the lignans, decreases inflammation and promotes healthy functioning of the immune system. Flax seed may be useful to manage autoimmune and inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and lupus.
Weight Management - research indicates that including flaxseed in your daily diet can help you manage your weight. Besides stabilizing your sugar levels, flax expands five times in bulk when ingested. Flax taken half an hour before meals will help you eat less, so you will lose weight while simultaneously strengthening your immune system.
Affect on Hormone Levels - Flax seed, with its high concentration of lignans, is a great choice for all women, whether younger, middle-aged, or older, as a natural way to normalize the menstrual cycle, manage menopause, and lower the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease. Intake of flaxseed on a daily basis results in hormonal changes that are beneficial to women of all ages. In menstruating women who consumed 10 grams (about 2 teaspoons) of flax seed on a daily basis, significant hormonal changes have resulted. These changes are similar to those seen after consumption of soy isoflavones. Positive effects included fewer cycle changes, along with a reduction in ovarian disfunction. This, in turn, may decrease the development of breast and other cancers. As women reach menopause, the level of estrogens in their body decreases. This not only gives rise to menopausal symptoms, but also increases the risk of disease, including cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. In post-menopausal women the protective effects of lignans is due primarily to their estrogenic activity. Lignans have even been proposed as an alternative to hormone-replacement therapy in post-menopausal women.
Protection against bone loss - Daily dietary intake of flaxseed offers protection against bone loss, may increase bone density, and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
Flax seeds have Anti-cancer Effects - Extensive studies on both breast and colon cancer indicate that flax seed may play an important role in cancer treatment, as well as prevention. A breast cancer prevention program done at the Princess Margaret Hospital and the Toronto Hospital, involving 50 women diagnosed with breast cancer revealed that- while waiting for surgery, half of the women received muffins containing 25 grams of milled flax seed daily while the other half received ordinary muffins. The women who received the flax seed muffins had slower-growing tumours compared to the other group.
Flax seeds help Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease - It aids in decreasing the so-called “bad” cholesterol. Increase the “good” cholesterol, decrease blood pressure, suppresse the development of atherosclerosis and inflammation, and enhances blood vessel tone. Researchers at the University of Toronto found that total blood cholesterol levels dropped by 9% and LDL (“bad” cholesterol) decreased by 18% when a group of nine healthy women added flax seeds to their regular diets.
