National Collegiate Athletic Association-Representative John Larson-University Of Connecticut

Connecticut lawmakers seek review after NCAA bans UConn

(Reuters) - Two members of Congress said Friday they would seek a review of the National Collegiate Athletic Association after its decision to ban the University of Connecticut from the 2013 "March Madness" post-season basketball tournament due to low academic grades by players. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative John Larson, both Connecticut Democrats, called the NCAA's enforcement of its academic standards - against UConn as well as some other schools in recent years - as being "arbitrary and unfair. ... read more..

Premature Fatigue-Stride Length

Running Form – Could it Cause Injury?

Running Form is not something I have given a lot of thought to up until now.  Sure I have tried to relax and pay attention to my stride, but it has always been a passing thought and something I convinced myself was other runners problems, and not mine.Previously, when thinking about running form, it was always with how it related to my speed and premature fatigue during long runs, and yet I rarely questioned if it had anything to do with any of my recent injuries.  In my mind, injury has always been associated with overtraining or shoe choice.  The only time I ever have related injury with form has been with extreme form issues, which I have always convinced myself I do not suffer from. This all changed this past Thursday when I attended the first of four sessions of a Running Form clinic put on by West Stride in Atlanta.  Kyle O’Day from Continuum Sports brought his 11 years of experience working with both elite and recreational athletes as he walked us through videos and demonstrations of both bad form and good form.  Kyle explained that all too often we try to “fix” our running with different kinds of shoes, or by changing obvious things like stride length and terrain, all the while ignoring the most fundamental reason for premature fatigue and injury – our form. The first session was very informative as we discussed form and what we would be doing in the coming sessions to fix any form issues we have.  Tonight is our second session, the first one that will have us doing what we all love to do – run.  I just am not sure how I feel about all the others seeing how bad my form truly is. :)I am excited to find out what I can do to improve my form, and ultimately my running.  Stay tuned and make sure you visit the 26.2 Quest Fanpage, @262quest and also subscribe to the RSS Feed to make sure you don’t miss any of the upcoming experiences I have with fixing my form. peterfeld:Two years after the April 20, 2010 BP oil spill, the Gulf is filled with deformed fish that the state of Louisiana says are perfectly safe to eat. Al Jazeera reports:“At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these,” Kuhns told Al Jazeera while showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp.According to Kuhns, at least 50 per cent of the shrimp caught in that period in Barataria Bay, a popular shrimping area that was heavily impacted by BP’s oil and dispersants, were eyeless. Kuhns added: “Disturbingly, not only do the shrimp lack eyes, they even lack eye sockets.”“Some shrimpers are catching these out in the open Gulf [of Mexico],” she added, “They are also catching them in Alabama and Mississippi. We are also finding eyeless crabs, crabs with their shells soft instead of hard, full grown crabs that are one-fifth their normal size, clawless crabs, and crabs with shells that don’t have their usual spikes … they look like they’ve been burned off by chemicals.” read more..

Sea Vegetables Sea Vegetables

Sea vegetables

Sea vegetables may be a better source of bioavailable iron than previously thought. One tablespoon of dried sea vegetable will contain between 1/2 milligram and 35 milligrams of iron, and this iron is also accompanied by a measurable amount vitamin C. Since vitamin C acts to increase the bioavailability of plant iron, this combination in sea vegetables may offer a special benefit.Brown algae (including the commonly eaten sea vegetables kombu/kelp, wakame, and arame may be unique among the sea vegetables in their iodine content. Some species from the brown algae genus Laminaria are able to accumulate iodine in up to 30,000 times more concentrated a form than sea water!Sea vegetables may be a unique food source not only of the mineral iodine, but also of the mineral vanadium.Sea vegetables may play a role in lowering risk of estrogen-related cancers, including breast cancer. Since cholesterol is required as a building block for production of estrogen, the cholesterol-lowering effects of sea vegetables may play a risk-reducing role in this regard. However, more interesting with respect to breast cancer risk is the apparent ability of sea vegetables to modify aspects of a woman’s normal menstrual cycle in such a way that over a lifetime, the total cumulative estrogen secretion that occurs during the follicular phase of the cycle gets decreased. For women who are at risk of estrogen-sensitive breast cancers, sea vegetables may bring a special benefit in this regard. Types of Sea VegetablesNot sure what sea vegetables to try? Here is a list describing their tastes and textures. Arame: Mild, semisweet flavor and thin but firm texture. Great as a side dish, but especially yummy with buckwheat. Hijiki: Robust in flavor and black in color. Hijiki is often tossed in salads. Kombu: Light in flavor and chewy. Expands and softens when soaked. Excellent food tenderizer and helps with the digestibility of beans. Adds a sweet flavor to root vegetables. Creates wonderful stocks and stews. Nori: Paper-thin, dark green sheets made from pressed sea vegetables. Nori has a flavor similar to tuna and was originally used as a sushi wrap. Nori flakes may be used as a flavorful condiment. Dulse: Savory-tasting, brownish green colored stalks. Wonderful for roasting with seeds and as a condiment. Wakame: Delicate, long, green strips. Wakame has a sweet flavor. When soaked, it expands a great deal, so cut it into small pieces. Wakame loves the company of carrots and parsnips and adds a sweet taste to legumes.Soaking Sea VegetablesSoaking sea vegetables will improve their digestibility, cooking time and taste. 1. Put sea vegetables in a bowl of cold water. Move your fingers through the stems. 2. Discard this water and rinse. Fill the bowl with cold water again and let sea vegetables stand for 15 to 20 minutes. Note: You can use the water to nourish your houseplants or rinse your hair. read more..

Depression

5 ways to live your life!

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about how I changed my life and recovered from depression, here is my answer:I live by 5 simple rules; they helped me change my life, no doctors, no pills and no one but myself!Changing your life can seem an incredibly tough and complicated thing, especially if you’ve failed a great number of times (like I did).
1. Accept CHANGE. Allow yourself to let go of the past to make room for new things to come into your life, meet new people, travel.2. Be BOLD. Stop putting your life on hold, set new goals and reach them! 3. Start to EXERCISE. No explanation needed, it will make you feel better and happier.4. Eat HEALTHY. Food can make you happy, food can make you sad. Eat less processed food, try to eat more vegan, vegetarian food, try raw food, eat more veggies and fruit. Believe it or not it will make you feel better!5. LOVE YOURSELF. You can do all stuff I wrote, but if you don’t appreciate yourself nothing will make you feel better! You can say that last ‘rule’ is the most important way to live your life!* I don’t say this is the best way, but it helped me to overcome depression and start with my weight loss journey. read more..

Sugary Foods

peanutbuttahealthnut:There are so many “foods” out there today...

peanutbuttahealthnut:There are so many “foods” out there today with health claims promising to lower your cholesterol, help you fit into that itsy bitsy teeny bikini, or allow you to eat a whole bag of chips for less than 140 calories.  All of that seems great.. until you learn what’s really in those foods. However, almost all of these foods are not really food at all.  They’re unhealthy, processed junk full of chemical sweeteners and all kinds of crazy ingredients.  Here are some top offenders (in my opinion!)1. Fiber One BarI put this on my list because I used to eat them every day in high school.  Wow, cool! It tastes like a candy bar .. and it’s only 90 to 140 calories!  However, there is a ton of sugar and sweeteners in these.  To lower the calorie count, artificial sweeteners are used, and we all know how bad those are for you.  Actually I singlehandedly blame them for a lot of my wants to binge on sugary foods. However, I will admit… the fiber is awesome.  Like, really awesome.Opt for : Luna bars, Lara bars, or make your own protein bars (the best option).  They’re higher in calories, so be careful and don’t make a habit of eating them!2. Yoplait yogurtOh my. Where do I begin?  While I was on vacation just this year, I picked it up thinking it was a healthy option for breakfast.  Halfway through eating it, I couldn’t take another bite after glancing at the nutritional information.  14g of sugar in the light yogurt, and I won’t even go into the ingredients on that list!Opt for: All-natural greek yogurt.  Try getting the plain kind and adding in honey & your own fruit if possible! I like Chobani the best.3. Deli MeatsI do buy low sodium, antibiotic-free, hormone-free (that’s a mouthful!) turkey slices on occasion, but I make sure not to eat it on a daily basis.  There’s a lot of sodium in them and they are still a processed food, believe it or not!Opt for: Whole chicken & turkey breasts.  It will taste more “real”, too :) You can still slice the chicken breast into deli-like slices!4. Low Calorie BreadUgh, yuck.  These are NOT A FOOD.  For real, they taste horrible and just peek at that ingredients list!  Isn’t bread supposed to be simple and clean?  This is one “food” that is most definitely not clean or healthy… and it will not keep you full.Opt for: Ezekiel bread5. Light Salad DressingNothing but sugar and chemicals.. and fat.Opt for: salsa, hummus, basil pesto, olive oil, oil & vinegar, or make your own salad dressing! Get creative.6. Diet ProductsAnything that says “diet”… aka, diet coke, diet cookies, 100 calorie snack packs, etc.  Seriously, get rid of your diet pop obsession!  Once I stopped drinking 1-2 diet cokes a day, I also stopped wanting to binge and also stopped getting horrible headaches.  Coincidence? I think not. Splenda/artificial sweetners suck!Opt for: water & lemon, seltzer w/ a splash of 100% juice, coffee, tea. 7. Fat FreeFat is not the enemy.. that is a complete diet falsehood that has been passed throughout our generation.  Fat does not make you fat.. processed junk food and excess food makes you fat!  Often fat free foods have added sugar and salt to make up for the lack of taste, so they may wind up being worse for you.  The only case where this is untrue is with fat free dairy products!Opt for: You shouldn’t be eating processed food anyways.. so.. just opt for the real version!  In the case of things like peanut butter, get the full fat.  It has the same calories and tastes better.8. Canned fruits in fruit juiceWhen buying canned fruits (which honestly, I think is kinda gross. I do like canned veggies sometimes though!), make sure you do not get the kind in heavy syrup.  There is so. much. sugar. in. that.Opt for: Real, fresh fruit!  If that’s not available to you, just make sure there is only the fruit in there.  As for canned veggies, get no salt added or light salt. I hope this helped to clear up some myths about all the “food” we have out there!  Clean foods don read more..

ALARMING !!! MODERN LIFESTYLES & ERRATIC MEAL TIMINGS:
Nowadays, most people just gulp fast foods particularly processed and bottled foods and eat at irregular intervals triggering the incidence of acidity. While acidity itself may appear innocuous, it can trigger more serious conditions like oesophageal and gastric cancers. Surprisingly, very acidic foods such as vinegar and lemons actually reduce acidity while milk, contrary to popular thinking stimulates acid secretion. Next time, though don't bite off more than you digest !!
